The first Ukrainian immigrants to Canada were Ivan Pylypow and Wasyl Eleniak, who arrived in 1891 and brought several families to settle in 1892. Pylypow helped to found the Edna-Star Settlement, the first and largest Ukrainian settlement. But it was Dr Josef Oleskow who is considered responsible for the large Ukrainian Canadian population by promoting Canada as a destination for immigrants from Western Ukraine (Galicia and Bukovina), in the late 1890s. Ukrainians from Eastern Ukraine, which was ruled by the Russian monarchy, also came to Canada, but in smaller numbers than those from Galicia and Bukovina.
As Galicia and Bukovina are wooded areas, upon arriving Canada, the settlers often demanded wooded land from officials so that they would be able to supply their own needs, even if this meant taking land that was less productive for crops. They also attached deep importance to settling near to family, people from nearby villages or other culturally similar groups, furthering the growth of the settlements. By 1914, there were also growing communities of Ukrainian immigrants in eastern Canadian cities, such as Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, and Windsor. Many of them arrived from the provinces of Podilla, Volyn, Kyiv and Bessarabia in Russian Ukraine. In the early years of settlement Ukrainian immigrants faced considerable amounts of discrimination at the hands of native-born Canadians Since World War II, most Ukrainians coming to Canada have tended to move to cities in the East, and there are now large Ukrainian communities in Toronto and Montreal.
Having been separated from Ukraine, Ukrainian Canadians have developed their own distinctive Ukrainian culture in Canada. To show their unique hybrid culture Ukrainian Canadians have created such institutions of Ukrainian Canadian culture -Edmonton’s Shumka Dance Ensemble, which is among the world’s elite Ukrainian dancers. Ukrainian Canadians have also contributed to Canadian culture. Actress and comedienne Luba Goy, painter William Kurelek, for example, are well known outside the Ukrainian community. In addition to the official English and French, many public schools offer Ukrainian language education for children. Generally this is the local Canadian Ukrainian dialect, rather than Standard Ukrainian.

National Holidays in the USA.
1.Reading.
Holidays in the USA
There are a lot of holidays in the USA. Many of them are associated with the history of the nation. The main holidays of the USA are New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
The New Year's Eve is a time for merriment. Most Americans spend this night with friends, at home or in restaurants. Thousands of people gather in New York in Times Square to see the New Year in. The Tournament of Roses takes place in Pasadena, California, on January 1 each year. Prizes are given to the cities with the most unusual floral compositions.
At Easter there is a tradition for people to buy new clothes. After church services many people take walks along the streets of their towns, wearing their new Easter hats and suits. This is usually called the "Easter Parade".
Memorial Day comes on May 30. It is dedicated to the memory of those who died for America in different wars. The national flags are put on the graves of soldiers on this day. This holiday, originally called Decoration Day, is traditionally marked by parades, memorial speeches and ceremonies, and the decoration of graves with flowers and flags. Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, on the order of General John Alexander Logan for the purpose of decorating the graves of the American Civil War dead.
The 4th of July, an Independence Day, is the biggest national holiday of the USA. On this day in 1776 a document, known as the Declaration of Independence, was adopted. During this holiday American cities have parades, people shoot off fire-works in parks and fields.
Thanksgiving Day comes on the fourth Thursday of November. When the first settlers landed in America, their first year was very hard and 50 of 100 people died. But the Indians taught people how to plant corn and wild vegetables and in autumn they got a large harvest. Thanksgiving Day was their holiday, the day of giving thanks to God. It is a family holiday and Americans try to gather all family at home on this day.
There are also some holidays which are not celebrated nation-wide, but only by each state separately.

Cities and Towns of the USA

1. Read the text and be ready to speak about the city you like the best.
There are very many large cities in the USA. Washington, the capital of the United States of America, is situated on the Potomac River. In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, for example, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, Washington is quite young. The capital owes much to the first President of the USA — George Washington. It was G. Washington, who chose the place for the capital and laid in 1790 the corner-stone of the Capitol, where Congress sits. Washington has many historical places. The largest and highest among the buildings is the Capitol with its great House of Representatives and the Senate chamber. There are no sky-scrapers in Washington because no other building can be higher than the Capitol.
New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest sea-port. It is situated in the mouth of the Hudson River. New York was founded by the Dutch. It is interesting to know that Manhattan Island — the central part of New York — was bought from the local Indians by the Dutch for 24 dollars. That was the most profitable commercial deal in the US history. Today Manhattan is the heart of business and commercial life of the country. New York is the city of skyscrapers. The highest of them is the 102–storeyed building. There are many other places of interest in New York: Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan, at Broadway, there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of the USA.New York is often called the cultural capital of the USA. There are more than 800 museums in New York.
Another large city of the USA is Boston, one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.
Los Angeles is America’s second largest city. Its name comes from the Spanish for ’the City of Angels’, because the land was originally claimed for Spain by missionaries in 1781. It became an American city in 1850 when California became part of the United States. Los Angeles is a popular place because of its pleasant semi- tropical climate and beautiful Pacific coast. Almost everyone drives to work. There are about four million private cars in Los Angeles and the level of air pollution is one of the highest in the country. Suburbs like Hollywood, the center of the movie industry, and Beverly Hills, where famous actors and other celebrities live, have also made Los Angeles a tourist attraction.
The third largest city in the USA, Chicago, is on the shore of Lake Michigan. Chicago is called the Windy City because of the strong winds that blow through it. Chicago is an industrial center. The city has always attracted a diverse population of Americans and new immigrants in search of jobs. Chicago is also a railroad and trucking hub. Its airport. O’Hare international, is the busiest in the world. and
San Francisco is the most interesting city in the United States. It occupies the northern end of a peninsula, so it is surrounded on three sides by water. San Francisco is famous for its bridges, fog and foghorns. The greatest attraction of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, which has become the symbol of the city. San Francisco is called the city of hills because it has 40 hills. It is famous for its picturesque cable cars, which climb these hills, and for its bright houses that cling to the hills along steep and narrow streets.
Of course, San Francisco has a lot of museums. But if you are tired of museums, you can visit Golden Gate Park, one of the largest man-made parks in the world, or go to Shakespeare Garden where you can find every flower and plant ever mentioned by the bard. San Francisco has a reputation as an intellectual, liberal, and slightly crazy city and his sights attract millions of tourists every year.

My Native Village.
1. Read and translate the text.
The Excursion to the Museum
Welcome to Lypnyazhka. It is a village situated in 10 km to the west of the center of our district. It is our little motherland, the paths of our childhood, the tastiest water of Andreyka. (All of us is a part of the history of our native Lypnyazhka.) It is rather big and beautiful village in Dobrovelychkivka district, the geographical center of Ukraine. Lypnyazhka is quite an old village. Many evidences testify the fact that our village is more than 400 years old. It is very difficult to determine the certain date of the village’s foundation, because all the documents were exterminated by the fascists.
The first settlement was in the XVI century. The natural conditions of the territory were very suitable for living. There was a small beautiful river the SuhyiTashlyk in the center of the settlement and asmall wood of limes near it. That’s why the settlement was called ’’Lypnyaky’’ first and ’’Lypnyazhka’’ later. Many people came to live there. The parts of the village were called by the places people came from. For example, “Bendershchyna”,  “Voloshchyna”, “Lybenshchyna”, “Lytovshchyna” and so on Her you can see flora and fauna of our village in that time. Please, look at the view of the village. Pay attention to the birds which are dominated in our place. Here you can see examples of different kinds of soil and trees, which you can find on the territory of Lypnyazhka.
Have a look to a model of old Ukrainian house. You can see a man and a woman and all the house equipment of that time. Here is a bowl called “zhlukto” for washing clothes. But they were washed in a very specific way: all dirty things were mixed with ashes in such bowls for several days. Then women washed them in the river with the help of wooden tool called “prannyk”.
Have a look at the national Ukrainian clothes of that time. The shirts were made of flax and hemp by women. Here you can see the clothes of that time which was made by people themselves: a woman’s jacket, embroidery shirts and towels, belts and so on.
Another important exhibit is a carpet. It was made by our workshop “Red Carpet” which appeared in 1929. The production of the workshop was popular not only in Ukraine but it was exported even abroad.
Our village has a very rich history. In ancient times it had been destroyed by Crimean Tartars for several times, but it was always rebuilt. Since 1644 Lypnyazhka was a place for Cossack winter living. Look here. This fact is proved by 50 rare museum exhibits, which were found on the territory of the village. They are a Turkish sabre and shield, a Cossack sword, some pipes and others. People found coins of 1630-1650. But unfortunately some of the exhibits were stolen some years ago. Our village was mentioned during BohdanKhmelnytskyi’s march to Moldova.
The settlers of Lypnyazhka took an active part in the struggle for its independence against Polish landlords. As a result our territory was in ruins at the end of the XVII century.
Only in 1750 after the foundation of Yelisavetgrad region Lypnyazhka became a military settlement. The third company of Uman regiment was settled down there. Besides military actions the soldiers went in for farming. In 1860 the military settlements were liquidated and the land was distributed among the officers and the soldiers of the company. The first settlers were the Markosyans, the Yezans, the Bychuks, the Bashchenkos, the Lebids and others. There are 4 houses in our village which were built in that period. You can see them in this picture. At that time the territory of  Lypnyazhka was 107 square km with the population of 5782 people. There was a church, a school, and some shops in it. You can see many agricultural implements of that period. In 1910 according to Stolypin Reform some peasants bought the land and began to work on it.
In 1917 the Soviet power was proclaimed in our village. But soon it was conquered by Austrian and German invaders. Only in April 1920 the Soviet power was proclaimed again. The villagers began to build their new life. By 1932 there were 12 collective farms in Lypnyazhka. The life of that period is depicted on these photos. Her you can see some old agricultural machines: a windmill for making flour and oil maker for producing oil.
But peaceful life of the villagers was interrupted by the Great Patriotic War. During it Lypnyazhka became the scene of cruel fighting. Almost all the men of Lypnyashka joined the
army to defend our motherland from the enemy. Here you can see many documents which show courage and heroism of our village-mates. 1015 men become soldiers and fought against the German fascists. Unfortunately 700 of our citizens did not come back from the war. We honour their memory on May 9 every year.
After the war the village was risen from the ruins and became finer than ever. Here you can see how our village was rebuilt. Hard working people lived in Lypnyazhka. Many of them were awarded by different orders and medals for their work. They are Shemendyuk (the Hero of the Soviet Union), Yezan S. and Matkovskyi M.( the Hero of Socialist Labour), Boiko M., Nikitin B., Pulya A.(the Order of Lenin) and many others. We are proud of our village and its people.
Nowadays the village is rather large. About 4000 people live there. The nature of Lypnyazhka is marvelous. There are some valleys, ponds, a small river SyhyiTashlyk  and a wood near it. We have two schools, a club, a post-office, a kindergarten, a hospital and many shops in the village. There was a large sugar plant here. But unfortunately it was destroyed. Our streets are wide and long. There are many fine modern houses in the streets of the village.
Besides Lypnyazhka is rich in talented and skilful people. Embroidery, carpet-making, art, weaving are the most popular kinds of folk crafts in Lypnyazhka. One of the best painters of our region is Ivan Verdysh. He was born in our village in 1935. He finished Art School in Odesa and painted more than 100 pictures during his life. You can see them in different museums and private collections of Ukraine. Verdysh is famous as a still life, landscape and portrait painter. He often comes to our school to tell us about his life and work. You can have a look at some of his paintings.
Here you can see the works of other skilful people of our village: MyhayloHusarov and TymophiyPrudkun. They depicted different scenes from the history of Ukraine, animals and nature. Creative work of these craftsmen became a school for young specialists.
Real masterpieces of embroidery were made by our famous craftswoman Maria Miroshnichenko. Her works impress people by their beauty. In general many people of our village can and like to embroider. Nowadays the whole family of Hontash( not only women but men too) can embroider wonderfully. They are active participants of different Folk Art Festivals of Ukraine.
It is very difficult to find a person in our district who doesn’t know our Folk Song Group “Red Snowball-tree” It was founded in 1937 by NatalkaMiroshnichenko. Since that time “ChervonaKalyna” is an active participant of all festivals of folk music. Their songs are heard by people of the whole Ukraine. In 1984 the group was given the name of People’s group.
Besides that we have an amateur theatre in our village. It was founded in 1991 and became the People’s theatre in 1996. We can often see their different performances in our village club.
You have been to an excursion at the museum of Lypnyazhka. It was founded in 1978. Here you can see the founders of it – the brothers Yesans. They collected, studied and systematized all the materials for us to know the history of our native village. The proverb says, “Who doesn’t know the past, he is not worth of the future.” All of us is a part of the history of our native village. We like Lypnyazhka and want the village to be more beautiful and prosperous.

Holidays and Traditions in Ukraine.
1.Read the text and name the main holidays.
fortune telling — ворожіння
Christmas carol —різдвяна колядка
a believer —віруючий
salvation — спасіння
There are many holidays in Ukraine. It is so pleasant to realize that each year starts with a holiday. It is the time to leave all the troubles forever and to look at the New Year with hope and expectations. This first holiday of the year is the New Year’s Day. The preparation for the holiday starts already in November. Everyone thinks about the best present for their family and friends. Children wait for this holiday impatiently, as they hope to find under a decorated New Year’s Tree a big and beautiful present, something they have dreamed about for a long time. Adults also have presents for each other, and wishes of a happy year, full of joy and success. The New Year comes at midnight on the 1st of January. This moment is considered to be a magic one. That’s why people raise their glasses with champagne and say to each other «Happy New Year!». Some people celebrate the New Year on the 14th of January according to the old-style Calendar.
One more popular winter holiday is Christmas. As it is one of the oldest holidays in Ukraine, many old Ukrainian customs, which go back to centuries ago, are connected with Christmas. These are fortune telling, signing Christmas carols, cooking traditional Ukrainian Christmas dishes going to church service. Children go from house to house, and sing Christmas carols. They wish all the best to the people who live in these houses. Of course, the carol-singers receive a reward for their wishes — a little money, sweets or cakes.
When the spring comes, it always brings popular holidays. The first spring holiday is the Women’s Day. It is the day of beauty and flowers. Women usually receive presents on this day. Their families thank them for their love and support during the year. There are also the Mother’s Day and the Family Day in spring. They are celebrated in May and serve as one more reason for the members of the families to thank each other for understanding and support. But the most important spring holiday is Easter. Believers do not eat meat and animal products several weeks before the holiday. It is the time to stop and think about Jesus Christ’s death tor our salvation and about what we have to do to improve ourselves.
In summer there are two state holidays: the Day of Constitution on the 28th of June and Independence Day on the 24th of August. These holidays are connected with a new era in Ukrainian history that has begun. Now Ukraine is an independent state with its own Constitution. And we all hope for the better. The Ukrainian President appears on TV with his words of congratulation for Ukrainian people.
The first day of autumn is also a holiday. We celebrate the Day of Knowledge. This day means a lot for those pupils who go to school for the first time with parents at their side. A small girl rings the bell, pupils enter their school and school year starts.  There are many other important holidays in Ukraine, which bring joy and hope for the better.
