Reading Test.
A STRANGE TALE OF RIP VAN WINKLE
Once upon a time there was a farmer called Rip van Winkle. He lived in a village in the mountains with his wife and two young children, a daughter and a son. Rip was a very happy and kind man and he got on very well with all the children in the village. They loved him because he played games with them and often told them stories.
He spent a lot of time in the village inn because he was, in fact, a very lazy man. Rip was happy to do just enough work to live. Instead of working on his farm, he would go fishing and hunting or sit in the village inn talking to his friends. His family was very poor and he always argued with his wife. One day after a big argument Rip went to the forest and came to a beautiful valley, high in the mountains. Suddenly he heard a strange voice calling his name. An old man, dressed in old fashioned clothes, was trying to carry a barrel and asked Rip to help him. Rip agreed. They took the barrel to a cave, where there were more people dressed in the same strange clothes. After that the old man gave Rip a drink from the barrel. Rip immediately fell into a deep sleep.
Some time later he woke up under a tree in the same valley. He was alone. He was worried about his dog and he knew he was going to get into more trouble with his wife. Then he noticed a curious thing – hair was over his shoulders and his beard was over a foot long! Rip couldn't understand what had happened. He decided to get back to the village. As soon as he got there, he realized that everything was different, and there were lots of new houses. The people in the village stared at him with his long hair and beard and old clothes. Rip thought their clothes were strange and he didn't recognize anybody at all.
When he got to his house, he saw that it was old and abandoned. He went to the center of the village and everything there had changed completely. The old inn was now called the Union Hotel. Before he went in, he listened at the window. The people were talking about things he hadn't heard of – the elections, the president, the war. Rip went in and described his wife, family and asked people where they were. It turned out that his wife had died two years ago and all of his friends had either died or left the village. But his children were still there! They pointed to a young man sleeping under a tree. Rip realized it was his son! Then a young woman carrying a baby came up to him. It was his daughter!
In the end, Rip went to live with his daughter. He still didn't do much work. He spent the time as before, fishing, hunting and telling stories to children outside the village inn. UKRAINE AND UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION
1. Read the text:
Ukraine was one of the first 51 states to sign the United Nations Charter and since then, the country has consistently adhered to the purposes and principles of the Charter, contributing to maintenance of international peace and security, disarmament, economic and social development, protection of human rights, and strengthening of international law.
Today Ukraine is facing its most serious challenges since it achieved independence in 1991. The loss of control over parts of its territory and the armed conflictin in eastern Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, the displacement of almost two million, the destruction of infrastructure, and the loss of substantial industrial output.
The combination of the ongoing conflict and the difficult economic situation has brought further pain to Ukraine’s long-suffering people. But out of adversity comes opportunity. The new leaders took urgent and important steps to respond to the range of challenges and a sense of volunteerism swept the country. The international community is also playing a critical role in support of national efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, strong and united Ukraine.
The United Nations has responded to Ukraine’s call. The United Nations stands ready to further support Ukrainian efforts in three critical priority directions: humanitarian response, including for the conflict-affected regions and for internally displaced persons; recovery, stabilization and peacebuilding; and longer-term country-wide reforms and development, including promoting the rule of law and strengthening social stability and democratic governance.
There is still much to do in Ukraine to achieve sustainable human development but we believe that Ukrainians have the capacity and the will to do it. The United Nations will remain the trusted partner of the country and people of Ukraine on every step of this challenging journey.

1. Test yourself. Click here
2.        TEST (SAVE OUR PLANET)
Read the sentences and underline the correct word.
1.      Rare plant and human/animal species are disappearing.
2.      The trees are being cut / chopped down for paper or to make room for cattle farms.
3.      Birds and animals lose / miss their homes.
4.      Factories are polluting our rivers and lakes with dangerous oils/ chemicals.
5.      Sea life is threatened with extinction / loss.
6.      Cars and factories are giving off dangerous waste / fumes.
7.      We can plant trees and adopt / adapt animals.

Read this article about the problems of our planet. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A - F for each part (1- 5). There is one heading you do not need to use.

A   A watery grave.
D   Nature can heal itself.
B   Running out of time.
E   No trees - no life.
C   Choking to death.
F   We can do it!
We have spent thousands of years fighting for our survival. Yet now we have discovered that our planet is under threat and, to make matters worse, it's our entire fault.
1 ____________

The rainforests are dying, rare plant and animal species are disappearing, rivers and seas are being contaminated, crops are failing to grow, people are dying of hunger and the air is being polluted. It's time we woke up to these problems and started repairing the damage.
2 ___________

One of the major problems is the destruction of the rainforests in South America. They are home to half the world's species and to millions of people. Moreover, the rainforests clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen. The trees are being cut down for paper or to make room for cattle farms'. As a result, birds and animals lose their homes and die. This destruction is also bringing about changes in the climate, air pollution, flooding, drought and famine. If we continue to burn and cut down the rainforests as we are doing now, the earth will never be the same again.
3 ___________

Another big problem is water pollution. Do you like swimming in the sea or drinking a cool glass of water on a hot day? These simple pleasures may soon become a thing of the past. Factories are polluting our rivers and lakes with dangerous chemicals. Oil tankers are releasing thick, black oil into our oceans Tons and tons of industrial and domestic waste are poured into our seas. Consequently, sea life is threatened with extinction.
4 ___________

Air pollution is another important issue. The cars and factories in and around our cities are giving off dangerous fumes. In the past few years, more and more people than ever before have developed allergies and breathing problems. If we don't do something now, our cities will become impossible to live in.
5 ___________
Fortunately, it is not too late to solve these problems. We have the time, the money and even the technology to prepare the way for a better, cleaner and safer future. We can plant trees and adopt animals. We can create p arks for endangered species. We can put pressure on those in power to take action. Together we can j save our planet. All we need to do is open our eyes and act immediately.
